![]() The survey of 1,005 adults, commissioned by Readers Digest Magazine, also found that 26 per cent of those questioned have known a loved one was ill or in trouble before being told, while 43 per cent said they had picked up other people's thoughts or had their own thoughts read by other people. Women were slightly more likely to believe in the paranormal than men, and nearly 34 per cent of women said they had consulted a psychic or medium. However, 53 per cent of males said they sometimes knew who was ringing before picking up the phone, and 45 per cent had experienced a precognitive dream or premonition before an event. More than two-thirds said they could often sense when someone was looking at them. The survey also found that 53 per cent of people believe that ghosts or the spirits of the dead can communicate with the living. A fifth of those questioned said they had seen a ghost. More than 10 per cent believed that the mind could influence machinery or electronic equipment. Older people were more likely to believe in psychic powers, with 74 per cent of 55 to 64 year olds saying they thought ESP was possible, compared with 52 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds. One in ten of those questioned considered themselves to be psychic.
